When a television channel/news broadcaster has the Olympic logo in their logo, how can you expect them to be objective and unbiased in their reporting?
I actually don’t know TVB’s policy on using this logo, because they alternate from using this and their plain logo. It seems as if they only use this late at night, although I’ve seen it in the morning a few times. Right now, as I’m writing this, TVB’s using their plain logo. This screenshot is from an online version of last night’s program, so the quality isn’t that good.
If you think that’s scary, you should check out TVB’s mascot, TVBuddy, flying in and out of the Olympic rings:
As I’ve written before, the majority of HK’s media has taken a dangerous swing to the pro-Beijing and uber-nationalist side ever since the Olympic relay race started.
It’s one thing to air the Olympic when August comes, but this is way overboard.

You think all the TV stations in HK should do ZERO Olympic promotion prior to the Olympics, and just air the events in August? And you call them uber-nationalist for airing Olympic promotions?
I think you should come to the US and checkout how it’s done by NBC. I don’t see much difference, except NBC starts Olympic promotions much earlier. Each sporting event that they show years prior to the Olympics will have the Olympic logo. Nobody is calling them uber-nationalist.
I think you are the one who’s overboard…
Comment by Franklin Lin May 8, 2008 @ 2:08 pmWell, I think I should’ve been more clear:
When the 6.30 news rolls along and a reporter is on air trying to talk about human rights in China, and there’s that thing lurking behind him/her, the whole thing just seems a bit contrived.
This post was supposed to be a tad satirical.
But putting this aside, HK’s media (I think a survey of the major paper’s editorials would show this) has been increasingly pro-establishment in recent years (esp. after the Tibet backlash) and there are problems of excessive patriotism–all of which, if at a high enough dosage, could be fatal.
PS. I’d love to come over, if you’d let me stay at your place…and who knows what could happen…
